Overview

We offer an array of creative programs that assist our community in reclaiming a sense of dignity, strengthening ancestral knowledge,  and living their values with determination.  Sana Roots Co offers education and mentoring programs in traditional foodways courses, land restoration service learning, empathic communication, and healthy movement.  Our programs support participants along their journey of becoming engaged citizens that shape their environments for cultural revitalization, intergenerational collaborations, and thriving together.

Who We Are

Sana Roots Co. is a non-profit organization based in Yanaguana (San Antonio, Texas), created by members of SanArte Healing & Cultura Clinic and La Botanica.

Prosperemos Juntos/Thriving Together

In 2022, we embarked on a rich cultural healing and education pilot journey with the Methodist Healthcare Ministries (MHM) Prosperemos Juntos | Thriving Together learning collaborative— a 6-month project dedicated to advancing the health equity of our communities through building multi-sector coalitions. During this period, we assessed community strengths and layers of complex needs to co-design a dynamic cultural healing and leadership development program for our southside San Antonio community.  We are honored to have been accepted into this partnership with MHM and have been awarded funds to sustain our work until 2025.

Prosperemos Juntos/Thriving Together Goals

  • Foster strong relationships with diverse communities by actively engaging and involving community members (known through our program as Persons with Lived Experience, or PLE) in the design, implementation, and evaluation of health programs.

  • Provide language-accessible resources and services to ensure that language is not a barrier to accessing health information and services.

  • Develop and disseminate health education materials that are culturally responsive and tailored to the specific needs and/or preferences of our communities who do not have access to health resources.

  • Actively work towards reducing health disparities within our southside community, addressing systemic issues that contribute to the perpetuation of these inequities.

  • Empower community members to advocate for their health needs by providing resources and support for members to develop their voice in sharing their needs with providers.

  • Train PLE to take leadership positions within the organization and hold community circles/knowledge-shares with their families and other communities.

  • Advocate for policies that promote culturally rooted health education, invest public resources into community-led programs, educate providers in cultural humility and competence in healthcare delivery

  • Address root causes and social determinants of health that disproportionately affect our communities.

We successfully created our 501(c)(3) organization in May of 2023.  With our Prosperemos Juntos Program we are dedicated to building an internal structure of shared leadership, piloting curriculum with High School aged youth with unmet needs,  developing our governance, and building a program to ensure the fluid transition of PLEs into our organizational structure.

We met with various community members and were guided by consultants to support values-based approaches to a non-hierarchical structure that will result in a collective commitment and responsibility to achieve our goals.  This creates a foundation to empower PLEs and will ensure that they get to develop their skills, their voice, and their creativity in shaping the work to create thriving communities of care.

In 2024, we are excited to pilot and implement this program alongside our Southside community to co-develop a space that supports healing in a way that puts the power back into the hands of residents. We will offer programming to parents, caregivers, and students in a way that enables them to get focused skills development and space to mend and strengthen their relationships.  As we build connections with our partner organizations and PLEs, we hope to share our future visions, dreams, and light with you, our community.
